‘Modern Family’ Season 11 Inches Closer as Cast Negotiates New Deals
Modern Family is on its way to an 11th season on ABC, as the show’s six adult stars are negotiating to continue their roles.
Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O’Neill, Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara are in talks with producer 20th Century Fox TV to continue their roles in 2019-20, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The studio declined comment.
Modern Family co-creator Steven Levitan had previously said “the plan was to end it at 10” seasons, but that was before 20th Century Fox TV was poised to become part of Disney, which also owns ABC. The studio’s pending acquisition would remove one of the hurdles to a renewal, namely ABC having to pay a sizable license fee to an outside studio. Disney would also reap the backend benefits of having an additional season of the show in syndication and streaming.
The six leads have largely worked out financial terms of their new deals, sources tell THR, with a few other details still to be addressed. Their last negotiations resulted in substantial raises for the cast; the six who play parents on the show also have shares of the backend.
Deals with Modern Family’s younger actors — Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Rico Rodriguez and Nolan Gould — will be worked out after the six adults finish their negotiations. Levitan and co-creator Christopher Lloyd have said they’d be open to another season as well, though Levitan’s deal with 20th expired over the summer after he opted not to re-up.
